How ...
  1. He may answer immediately.

  2. He may answer at a later time.

  3. He may delay his answer to prayer in order to test somebody.

There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, "If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." Exodus 15:25-26

  4. God may expect you to do something before He answers your prayer. In that case, he will wait until you do things you suppose to do.

  5. In some cases, prayers are answered in advance, even before a person starts praying

24 "It shall come to pass That before they call , I will answer; And while they are still speaking, I will hear.

  6. God’s answer to prayer may be bequeathed to the children or descendants. For example, a man prayed to have the spirit of vision. God replied that the gifts shall be manifest in the man’s children. As another example, David wanted to build temple for God, but God said that it is David’s son that shall build the temple.

12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 7:12-13

God is so holy that He would rather delay to receive a holy offering, than to hurry into receiving unholy gifts from unqualified hands.
